Pumpkin ‘Uchiki Kuri’
Pumpkin ‘Uchiki Kuri’, also known as Red Onion Squash is not only delicious, nutritious and easy to grow, it looks beautiful.
Ideal for those with a small garden, since it can be trained up a trellis or strong wigwam. Plant one either side of an archway for a stunning display of large, yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers, which are followed by deep orange fruits, the size and shape of large onions.
Prized by chefs for the sweet, nutty, creamy flesh and skin which softens when cooked, so can be eaten too. Ideal for roasting, curries, casseroles and soups. The Japanese braise it in vegetable or chicken stock.
Extremely nutritious containing vitamin A, C, B, calcium, potassium, beta carotene and fibre.
Plant outside in a sunny position after the risk of frost. Protect young plants from slugs. Water and feed regularly. When the squashes are ripe, probably September, remove from the plant with at least 5cm stalk and cure by standing in the sun daily for 5 – 7 days. Store in a cool dry place for up to 3 months.
Supplied as 2 plants in 7 cm pots. Dispatch is May – June
